The work done to heal the inner child is a gradual process as part of a program consisting of trauma-focused approaches.

A summary of the process includes.

You become conscious of the inner child, recognising and acknowledging their existence. Examine its version of childhood experiences and family dynamics, including any programming you might have internalised as a child. We establish a connection with the child, learning to value and respect the inner child, acknowledging what they experienced whilst offering compassion and empathy. Through dialogue, understand and confront the historical pain and unmet needs.

Becoming conscious of your adult, recognising and acknowledging their existence. Examining their development and the role they currently play.

Eventually, we teach the parent part of the personality how to support the inner child just like any natural good parent would support a flesh-and-blood child—providing healthy discipline, limits, boundaries, and structure. Creating a balanced relationship on a conscious level can allow the inner child to experience safety, happiness and playfulness. The process can also empower the inner adult to end toxic relationships by building self-esteem and discovering unconditional love and respect.

Through continued inner child support, nurturing, and acceptance, we can maintain ongoing communication between the inner child, inner parent and inner adult. This cooperative and symbiotic relationship becomes devoid of conflict and creatively satisfied."

The therapeutic Modalities Used

Hypnosis is particularly effective in accessing the inner child as it is simple yet powerful—going back in time to meet their younger self and realise what happened wasn't their fault. Then the realisation that they no longer need to carry any of this blame or guilt, but instead that they can now be loved and cared for unconditionally.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) help to understand how patterns in thinking and behaviours are often shaped by childhood experiences (ACEs).

EMDR, known as Eye Movement Desensitisation, is a powerful method that helps clients deal with confusing symptoms or feelings.

Inner child Self-Care

An essential aspect of overcoming childhood trauma and working with the repressed memories and the painful emotions involves offering ourselves understanding, compassion, and love. This is work begins first in therapy and then as a practice in daily life.

Engaging in this type of self-care and self-compassion becomes a source of self-discovery, which is essential in supporting inner child work as you realise that you are worthy enough to receive it.

Being able to effectively parent that little voice inside your head that's feeling insecure or fearful, and learning to be aware of and express those feelings on behalf of the inner child, becomes powerful work.

Childhood's joyful qualities can re-emerge as the inner child feels increasingly safe, heard and loved, and becomes more integrated into the adult person. You may find it easier to access playfulness and curiosity, find a magical beauty in your environment, and feel warmth and empathy in relationships. Instead of seeing the world around you as a source of potential threats to your safety and sense of self, you begin to experience it with a sense of wonder, magic, and possibilities.
